more info on our B&B
Wonderful! So you made the first step, you booked your stay at our B&B.
Will I get bored there? How will I get to places? What will I do there? What’s out there? You probably have all these questions in your mind. This is why we created this for you, so you can have a little bit more info about our place.
Our B&B is a family house. You will experience living with local Indonesians while you’re with us. It has a swimming pool, patios, sun decks, tropical garden; it’s a lovely and safe place to be in Jakarta. I’m pretty sure you know Jakarta is a polluted and “not so clean” city. Not to mention crime rates are quite high, but that’s why many travelers and especially families choose to stay at our B&B, because you will be safe and you will feel like you’re in a tropical paradise far from the hustle & bustle of the vibrant but crazy city.
In our area (South Jakarta), you will meet ordinary Indonesians, very hard working and polite, easygoing, helpful, and most of whom haven’t seen many foreigners before. Unlike some touristy areas in Central Jakarta, these folks would not try to cheat you, rob you, or take advantage of you.
Because the airport is about 1 hour away with the traffic, we would not recommend staying at our place if you only going to stay for 1 night in Jakarta and fly out the next morning. But if you have at least 2-3 days to spend for fun in Jakarta, you definitely will not regret staying with us.
Below are some activities that we can suggest for you to do while staying at our B&B.
Visit a nearby traditional market, called Pasar Minggu. Go early in the morning. Take the minivan bus M20 at the entrance of our alley (pay about $0.50). Don’t bring a lot of money or valuable things. Just bring a camera (make sure you hold on to that camera real tight) and take awesome pictures of spices, people, colors, fruits, food, vegetables, seafood, etc.
Visit the nearby Ragunan Zoological Park. Ragunan Zoo has some samples of our flora & fauna that you probably won’t see in other countries (orangutans, Sumatran Elephants, Sumatran tiger, Javanese Rhino, Komodo dragon, etc). This can be a fun thing to do if you’re coming with young children. The parks in this zoo are quite nice too. You can take the minivan M20 to the back entrance of the zoo. The zoo is usually crowded on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays.
Evening outdoor street food market: At night time, take the minivan bus 20 to the T junction (PERTIGAAN), 15 minutes from our B&B. You’ll see Circle K (where you can buy beer, liquor, etc) and bus stop. You will see outdoor street food vendors selling all kind of delicious goodies. So far, no travelers experienced stomach problems from eating at this food court.
Here are some food recommendations:
-Satay (kebabs with peanut sauce usually beef or chicken). They also offer Satay PADANG. This means the vendor uses a curry sauce instead of peanut sauce. Equally delicious!
-Bakso (beef noodle soup. Similar with Vietnamese Phó)
-Martabak Telor (it’s similar to Indian roti made with duck eggs, meat & green onion fillings. The process of making martabak telor is video-worthy. Your friends back home will love watching it. The cook will ask how many eggs you want for the roti- 2 are usually enough (unless you’re super hungry).
-Nasi goreng (fried rice)
-Mie goreng (fried noodles)
-Pecel lele (grilled or sometimes fried catfish with vegetables and rice and spicy hot sauce on the side)
-Ayam goreng (fried chicken with vegetables and rice)
-Mie Ayam (chicken noodle soup)
Indonesian traditional spa. Ladies, I know you like to be pampered! Ask Mrs. Clara (our B&B keeper) for the closest “salon” or spa/hair dresser. There are a couple of them near our B&B. Make sure you try:
1. manicure & pedicure (for about $5)
2. lulur (Indonesian body herbal scrub, after this treatment your skin will feel like a baby’s) usually about $10. 1.5 hours.
3. cream bath (Indonesian herbal scalp and hair deep conditioning treatment) usually about $5. 2 hours.
4. facial (using Indonesian herbal/fruit extracts) usually about $7. 1.5 hours.
5. Indonesian massage (using traditional oil) about $10. 2 hours.
If you have the time, you can do it all at once. You can spend about 3-4 hours in the spa for less than $40.
On-call massage service: If you don’t want to go to a spa, and need someone to give you a massage after a long flight, tell Mrs. Clara to call our masseuse. The masseuse can come to our B&B and give a 2 hour massage for $6.
Beer, wine, etc: As I mentioned before, if you need to buy alcohol, you can take the bus to the T junction (15 min) and stop at Circle K. Perhaps it’s a good idea to stop here first on the way to our B&B; just ask the taxi driver to wait for you. Than you can ask our keeper to save your beer/drinks in our fridge.
Taxi & car service: If you need a taxi, you can ask the B&B staff to find you a taxi. You don’t need to leave the B&B, as they’ll get a taxi for you from the street and will inform you if they found one. There’s a Blue Bird taxi station near our B&B which takes 5-10 minutes for the staff to get a taxi for you (even in the morning). If you need to rent a private car with a driver, ask Mrs.Clara to call a nearby tour agency and they will provide this service. The tour agency can help you get plane tickets as well. For train tickets it’s better if you go to Gambir Train Station to get them. Our staff can tell you how to get there by bus.
Indonesian cooking classes at our B&B with Mrs. Clara: Take advantage! In the morning she’ll take you to a local market to buy the ingredients, and than stop somewhere near the market for Indonesian breakfast, go back to our B&B and start cooking, and by lunch time you can eat your own food. Learn how to make homemade coconut milk, hot sauce, curry sauce and peanut sauce.
Bars, pubs, nightlife, restaurants: Visit Kemang District, which is about a 20 minute taxi ride from our place (depending on traffic). Kemang District has trendy bars, cafes, and restaurants (Italian, Mexican, Indian, etc) and is not dodgy at all. You won’t find prostitutes, drug dealers, or hawkers in this area. Kemang also has a shop called Kemchicks that offers foreign products (cheese, wine, sausages, ham, bacon, magazines, cigarettes, organic products, etc) from Australia, New Zealand and the US.

Bookstores, malls, movies, shopping: Take a 20-30 minute taxi ride from our B&B to Pondok Indah Mall or 15 minutes to Cilandak Mall. Pondok Indah Mall is bigger. These malls have everything you need, from English bookstores, pharmacies, restaurants, movies, and shopping.
Local pharmacies, ATM, banks, money changers, internet cafes, DVD rental, are around the T Junction (take the minibus van number 20). Ask Mrs.Clara or the B&B staff.
We have TV with cable & a DVD player on the 2nd floor of the main house. You can watch TV, news, and DVD there if you wish.
Upon arrival, you can ask Mrs. Clara how to get to places using public transportation (train station, National Monument, old Batavia, Sunda Kelapa Harbor, major bus station, etc).
